Empower Your Team Early and Often
I want to talk to you about a topic that's more vital than your coffee this morning – empowerment.
Early on, I didn't think it was important. Later on, I figured out it was important, but imagined it would be like turning on a light switch. As I snap my fingers, a symphony of motivated employees, creativity all around, and tasks handled with ninja-like precision. Easy, right?
Of course, I had to learn the hard way (which I feel is the only way I learn), that this was different. Generating high levels of creativity and productivity had little to do with me. There wasn't a formula where X amount of work I put in would equal higher output from them.
Instead, it was a series of adjustments and processes that led to the outcome I was looking for.
First, I focus on creating a space where one feels safe to express any feedback; Good and bad. Nothing crazy, but set up 1:1 time consistently. And no, talking on Slack every day is not the same. Create a calendar invite, and show up. Keep the agenda light, and start by asking "What's on your mind?" Then ask "What else". There is no aim besides listening, and learning.
Next, build a path for them to walk on. It's your responsibility to provide the resources and opportunities for others to succeed. If you've listened well, you'll build a path that parallels their aspirations. Your team should know exactly what your role is in their growth, so don't hesitate to be direct in expressing this.
You're not carrying them on the path, and certainly not walking it for them. Be a distant guide. Offer protection and be there to advise on any obstacles. Let them know it's ok if they fall. Tell them again they can fall , and again; You'll be there to help, but only if they want to get back up.
Think about new teams or younger employees. They carry a different type of hunger, especially when it comes to proving themselves. Empowerment can provide instant impact and performance at the highest levels.
At the same time, the team member learns from their mistakes, gain confidence, and find purpose. Dare I say, it's a win-win? After all, they decided where they wanted to go, not you.
Give it a try and see how it goes.
Stay amazing,
