How to Stay Motivated When Your Career Path Looks Like a Picasso

Recently, I've felt that motivation has been replaced by discipline. I can see why. Discipline is something one can rely on; It exudes consistency and predictability. In parallel, I've seen motivation dragged through the mud. It's looked at as something fragile, and an antithesis to everything discipline represents.

I don't agree. Without motive, you wouldn't have left your bed today. It takes work to maintain it, that's all. Motivation changes like the wind, so you can't sit back and watch it push you forward. Yes, discipline plays a big role in making sure you stay on your path, but there are ways to maintain motivation.

When you look back on your career, do you see a straight line where you've gracefully climbed the ranks? So predictable where over the horizon you see a "CEO" or "VP" title? More likely than not, your path looks like a Picasso. Dramatic turns, up swings, and unexpected pitfalls. In those moments, it's vital to stay motivated. Here's a framework that I've used for the last 10 years.

1. Befriend the Fog: Embrace the unknown. Obsessing over a nonexistent map will only drain your energy. Instead, view this as an opportunity to explore, experiment, and discover hidden paths. Talk to colleagues, shadow different departments, and volunteer for cross-functional projects.

2. Growth Mindset Over Growth Ladder: Ditch the rigid ladder mentality. Growth isn't about promotions and titles. It's about expanding your skillset, mastering new challenges, and becoming a more valuable asset. Focus on acquiring new skills, and taking on stretch assignments. Remember, the best promotions often go to those who've already proven their worth.

3. Find Your Own Everest: Every job has its own peaks. It might be streamlining a process, or exceeding a sales target. Set your own internal goals, celebrate your mini-victories, and track your progress. Seeing yourself conquer personal challenges, even in a stagnant role, is a powerful motivator.

4. Rekindle the Flame: Remember why you started this journey in the first place. Was it the company's mission? The awesome team culture? The free snacks? Reconnect with your initial motivations. Rekindle the passion that drew you to this role, and use it as fuel to keep going.

5. Network: Don't underestimate the power of connections. Talk to people in different departments. Attend industry events, and build relationships with mentors and peers. These connections can open doors to unexpected opportunities, both within your current company and beyond.

6. Invest in You: Remember, you are not an employee; you're a human being with aspirations. Invest in your personal and professional development. Take online courses, attend workshops, or read books on topics that interest you. A well-rounded you is a more motivated and adaptable you.

7. Keep Your Options Open: While staying positive and engaged in your current role is crucial, don't be afraid to keep your eyes peeled for opportunities elsewhere. update your resume, network strategically, and stay informed about industry trends. Being prepared for the right opportunity when it strikes is key.

Remember, career paths are rarely straight lines. Embrace the twists and turns, focus on your own growth, and keep your inner flame burning bright. And who knows, you might discover that the most rewarding journey wasn't about reaching the top of a predetermined ladder, but about forging your own path through the beautiful (and sometimes baffling) maze of your career.
